Your Comments and Ideas

This is your page where you can submit articles which other beekeepers might find interesting - so it's up to you to post them!

Know your onions!

One member firmly believes that should you be stung by a desperate bee - then you should rub the affected area (you - not the bee!) with the cut side of an onion - she states that it relieves the discomfort almost immediately!

Going up in Smoke!

Beekeepers burn all types of combustible materials in their smoker while manipulating their hives: corrugated cardboard, paper, hay, even the puffball fungus said to subdue the bees due to its narcotic effect!

Two natural objects available, free for the picking and which have been found to be 'pleasing' are moss and pine cones.

If you have a favourite fuel not listed here let's hear from you.

As You Like It!

Most honey, apart from heather honey, granulates (sets) in time.

Did you know that the recommended temperature required to liquify honey is 130 degrees F for 45 minutes and for creamed honey it is 90 degrees F for 24 hours. Careful monitoring should be carried out to ensure that the temperatures are not exceeded as it is so easy to destroy the natural enzymes, volatile oils and flavour of the honey.
